The housing crisis, forcing people to live in non-suitable conditions, is a worldwide phenomenon. In this interactive artwork, the Korean artist Sanghee Lee explores multiple one-room apartments, typical residential spaces for many people in South Korea. She places the “onerooms” stacked in each other in a dreamy, coral-filled underwater world, emphasising the feeling of crampedness and inability to take a full breath. Filled with extracts from interviews with young people experiencing such living conditions, Oneroom-Babel turns the crisis of housing into a dream-like coming-of-age experience. What better place to showcase this work than Czechia, one of Europe’s least affordable countries to purchase property?
