A young Iranian immigrant is trying to settle in Europe. To cope with her feelings of homesickness, she buys a familiar and distinctive spice: saffron. As soon as she unpacks it in her kitchen and begins to cook, the fragrant smell permeates her entire being and triggers painful memories of the perilous journey she undertook with her family to find safety. Less Than 5Gr of Saffron is a short film that explores feelings of uprootedness and survivor’s guilt through masterful immersive visual storytelling, which was also recognised with a Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. This story may be fictional, but it encapsulates hundreds of others that are not.
