Lacuna

documentary

Lacuna—a Latin word meaning “gap” or “missing part”—becomes the key to understanding this deeply personal VR documentary. The story of Sonja revolves around a void in memory: a WW2 childhood whose pivotal moment has been erased. A relic from eighty years ago, three silver napkin rings, opens a passage toward what was left unsaid. Viewers journey through landscapes of memory and forgetting: Suriname of Sonja’s childhood, wartime Amsterdam, archival footage, and imagined spaces that attempt to fill what is missing. Peek through the pastel curtains of memory to confront the silences and gaps from which both personal and collective histories are composed.
