In 1912, the French painter Marcel Duchamp created a cubist-futurist painting of a nude woman descending a staircase. The woman's body was used as an object to represent the different phases of movement in an artistic way. The German artist Lilian Hess decided to change the story of the figure in Duchamp's painting. Her Duchampiana breaks away from convention when she decides to move upwards, towards the sky. Knowing neither limits nor goals, she embarks on a journey up an endless staircase to a free and authentic self that is always moving forward. Duchampiana is an immersive VR installation where the audience ascends on a real stepper next to the main character to cross the barrier of social constructs together.
